Thus, whereas many individuals develop systemic viral infections, only a few develop symptomatic infection of the central nervous system (CNS). Viruses vary widely in their potential to produce significant CNS infection. For some viruses (eg, mumps), CNS infection is a common but a relatively benign part of the syndrome. For others (eg, Japanese encephalitis), neurological disease is the most prominent clinical feature of the systemic infection. A third group of viruses are those which commonly cause infection, but only rarely cause encephalitis (eg, herpes simplex virus [HSV]). Lastly, there are viruses for which human infection inevitably and exclusively results in CNS disease (eg, rabies). In addition to acute pathology, other viruses (eg, measles) can cause syndromes of post-infectious encephalopathy.

Vaccination against Mosquito Borne Viral Infections: Current Status

Mosquito borne infectious diseases are among important group of diseases worldwide. Vaccination is available for some tropical mosquito-borne diseases, especially for Japa-nese encephalitis virus infection and yellow fever. There are also several attempts to develop new vaccines for the other mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue infection and West Nile virus infection. In this articl...

Management of Viral Central Nervous System Infections: A Primer for Clinicians

Viruses are a common cause of central nervous system (CNS) infections with many host, agent, and environmental factors influencing the expression of viral diseases. Viruses can be responsible for CNS disease through a variety of mechanisms including direct infection and replication within the CNS resulting in encephalitis, infection limited to the meninges, or immune-related processes such as a...

Noncytopathic replication of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and eastern equine encephalitis virus replicons in Mammalian cells.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) viruses are important, naturally emerging zoonotic viruses. They are significant human and equine pathogens which still pose a serious public health threat. Both VEE and EEE cause chronic infection in mosquitoes and persistent or chronic infection in mosquito-derived cell lines. In contrast, vertebrate hosts infected wit...

Viral encephalitis.

While systemic viral infections are exceptionally common, symptomatic viral infections of the brain parenchyma itself are very rare, but a serious neurologic condition. It is estimated that viral encephalitis occurs at a rate of 1.4 cases per 100.000 inhabitants. Geography is a major determinant of encephalitis caused by vector-borne pathogens. A diagnosis of viral encephalitis could be a chall...
